NEWPORT, Vt. - The City of Newport will soon have an additional police officer patrolling the streets.
On Town Meeting Day, voters approved the budget for an additional full time officer. The city now has a dozen on the force.
Newport City Police Chief Seth DiSanto says the extra officer is especially important because the city has seen a rise in crime.
"We have seen a tremendous increase in the calls of service and the burden on our department over the last several years which our statistics clearly indicate," DiSanto said. "We want to make sure we can provide proper service to the citizens and those that visit the community."
The officer will be hired by July 1. This allows the school resource officer to stay at Newport High School.
