Plattsburgh Couple Dead after Apparent Murder-Suicide

PLATTSBURGH - Police have identified 61-year-old Ann Marie Cashman and 63-year-old Wayne Cashman as the married couple dead from an apparent murder-suicide early Monday morning. Police say Wayne Cashman killed his wife and then himself.

It was a newspaper delivery man who noticed something was wrong at their home on 79 Maryland Road. He was dropping off the paper when he found a note.

"The paper delivery guy sees a note on the outside of the house," explained Plattsburgh Police Chief Desmond Racicot. "And it says 'Call 911, Murder/Suicide'."

That was at 5:10 a.m., about an hour after next-door neighbor Peggy Rouleau says she woke up to a sound.

"I heard like a 'bang,' and I though maybe someone broke in next door, or maybe it was my house," said Rouleau.

When police arrived they found Ann Marie Cashman lying in her bed, dead from a gunshot wound. Police then found a second note, with a confession from Wayne Cashman and directions to go down to the waterfront.

As a precaution, police took their armored rescue vehicles to the lakefront. These vehicles are bullet-proof and are surplus military vehicles given to the department. Police found a car by the water and approached it, eventually finding Wayne Cashman dead on the ground, with what Chief Racicot called a "self-inflicted gunshot wound."

Neighbors like Peggy Rouleau are shocked.

"I can't even picture him mad," she said. She had been friends with the couple since she moved next door three years ago.

"I've never seen any cross words between them," she said. "He was very attentive to her, and he adored his grandchildren. He was always taking them someplace."

Police say they've never been called to the Cashmans' home before. The autopsy on Wayne Cashman was done Monday afternoon, and the autopsy on Ann Marie Cashman is scheduled for Tuesday. Police say it will take weeks to get the results.

Police do not yet know a motive.
