SHAFTSBURY, Vt. - Vermont State Police responded to a vehicle crash on Vermont Route 7A in Shaftsbury Tuesday night. The accident happened just before 7 p.m.
Police say when Vanessa Hoyt, 25, of Bennington, Vt., leaned back to get her 1-year-old baby its bottle she drove off the road and crashed into a tree. When the vehicle hit the tree, the engine compartment burst into flames.
A passer-by was able to get Hoyt and her baby out of the vehicle prior to emergency services arriving at the scene.
Hoyt suffered an arm injury from the crash and the baby was unharmed.
Police say during the crash, Hoyt was not wearing a seatbelt, but the infant was restrained in an infant car seat. Both were transported to Southwestern Vermont Medical Center for further evaluation.
Police say at the hospital Hoyt was screened by a drug recognition expert and was found to be under the influence of narcotics at the time of the crash.
Hoyt was arrested and charged with driving while under the influence of drugs and endangering the welfare of a child.
Hoyt is due in court on Tuesday.
