ST. ALBANS, Vt. - A man will appear in court after a deadly road rage shooting Wednesday in St. Albans. The incident happened at around 5:40 p.m.

Police say 30-year-old Matthew Webster, of St. Albans, Vt., shot Anna Alger, 31, of Highgate, Vt. during an argument. He was arrested a short time after.

"We believe this was a case of road rage that went awry and turned violent," Lieutenant Ron Hoague said.

Prior to the incident, Webster ran a red light in his black sedan. Police say he just had a fight with his wife, who was following him in another car. Webster almost hit a car, which turned out to be the victim's silver car.

Alger followed Webster and after the two pulled over, there was an argument. Police say Webster then shot Alger several times.

The woman was transported to Northwest Medical Center where she later died from her injuries.

Webster and Alger didn't know eachother prior to the argument.

"It's pretty shocking. I've been a police officer for 23 years now and I've seen violence of all different kinds," Hoague said. "Even after all that, it's still shocking to see this happen with two people who seem to not even to know each other."

Webster will appear in court Thursday morning.
