BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Red Cross says they've responded to scenes 51 times in 50 days. That's 86% over this time last year.
This reflects a steady increase over the past four years. Now, more Red Cross involvement doesn't necessarily mean more fires.
"I think the economy is still hitting people pretty hard and they're turning to the Red Cross for assistance where they might not have in the past," Doug Bishop, VT & NH Upper Valley Region of the American Red Cross, said. "So while we hope it's not an increase in the number of fires, it's just an awareness that's increasing. It's a little hard to tell."
Red Cross responders are all volunteers. So with this increase demand, the Red Cross is always looking for more volunteers and donations.
