Rep. Welch Advocates for NEXUS Program

NEXUS is a system for quicker screenings at border crossing and airports.
SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Vermont's lone Congressman hopes you'll join him in signing up for a NEXUS card.

NEXUS is a system for quicker screenings at border crossing and airports.

If you're going to and from Canada, you'd be able to use an express lane to cut down on wait times. It takes an interview and a background check to get the card.

Rep. Peter Welch signed up for his on Monday at the Customs & Border Patrol Office in South Burlington.  “This is very important to commerce and it's very important to the convenience of travelers,” said Rep. Peter Welch (D – Vermont). “The more friendly we can make it for folks to come to Vermont and to leave Vermont, in and out of our borders and in and out of our airport, the more user-friendly it is."

If Vermonters are interested, this week would be the best time. Otherwise, you have to apply in person, at the Champlain, New York crossing.

Mobile NEXUS application sites this week:

June 3 - Montpelier, Statehouse, 115 State St. (8am – 4pm)

June 4 – St. Albans at the Federal Building, 50 S. Main St. (8am – 4pm)

June 5 – Newport at Gateway Center, 84 Fyfe Drive (8am – 4pm)
