Vermont Republican Party Statement

"We are proud that Vermont Republicans will be represented in November’s general election by Scott Milne for Governor and Phil Scott for Lt. Governor.  Further, we remain confident that when the votes are counted, Shane McCormack will be our nominee for Attorney General.

With these decisions made and with the voice of Vermont Republicans clear, it is time to unite and support our candidates with one voice.

The challenges Vermonters are facing are very real and significant -- and not limited to any person or issue.

Vermont’s stagnant economy is leaving too many Vermonters behind and there continues to be no remedy offered by Governor Shumlin or the unbalanced Democrat supermajority in the state legislature.

Vermont’s crisis of affordability is growing as state spending and taxes -- especially property taxes -- continue to rise and place enormous financial burdens on our working families, young people, seniors and small businesses.

The mere threat of a $2.5-billion tax hike to pay for government run, taxpayer funded, single payer healthcare is already impacting growth in our economy.  The Shumlin administration’s dismal performance in managing and overseeing the launch of Vermont’s health care exchange website -- Vermont Health Connect -- has inspired no confidence among Vermonters, and many healthcare providers, about this administration’s ability to manage the state’s healthcare system.

Vermonters know that restoring balance to Montpelier is necessary to deliver real solutions for our state.  They know that lopsided government isn’t working and isn’t providing the vital checks and balances that produce reasonable and fully vetted solutions to these very real problems.

Vermont Republicans will offer Vermonters new hope and a new vision for our state.  By removing the obstacles to job creation, we can usher in a new era of growth and opportunity for all Vermonters.  By fundamentally reforming our oppressive tax system, we can reduce the property tax burden and ease our crisis of affordability while providing expanded educational opportunities for our children.  And by reforming our healthcare system in ways that lower costs, expand choices and drive continuous healthcare quality improvement, we can assure access for all Vermonters at a price they can afford.

With deeply entrenched and well funded incumbent Democrats fighting to maintain their lopsided one party rule in Montpelier, our challenge is great.

With unity, clarity and a strong vision for our state’s future, Vermont Republicans offer Vermonters a choice for a new direction -- a more balanced, reasonable direction.

This is what Vermonters want and deserve.

It’s time for a change."

Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin's Statement

"Serving as Vermont's Governor is the greatest privilege of my life, and I'm thankful for the support I received today and over the years.

In the last four years we've made great progress together, and I'm incredibly proud that Vermont is leading America in so many ways. With one of the nation's lowest unemployment rates, the top solar job creation ranking and businesses that are innovating and growing jobs, our future is bright and full of opportunity.

Our challenge is to seize that opportunity so we can continue creating jobs, expanding opportunity and moving forward in the Vermont way. I look forward to engaging with Vermonters on how we can do that this fall."
