WASHINGTON - Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) is spearheading a push to protect officers everywhere.
Leahy wants his bulletproof vest grant partnership program to be renewed.
Since 1999, the program has allowed Vermont officers to buy nearly 4,000 vests. Leahy says every law enforcement agency understands the importance of this program.
"They understand the unfortunate reality that life-saving vests can be extremely expensive, especially for smaller jurisdictions and that they can wear out too soon. They also understand that Congress has played an invaluable role in supporting this program, and many officers are alive today because of it," Sen. Leahy said.
On a national level, the program has provided more than one million vests to some 13,000 law enforcement agencies.
