According to the U.S. Navy, there is an active shooter reported inside the Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters building on the Washington Navy Yard. Shots were reported fired around 8:20 Monday morning.
WASHINGTON - According to the U.S. Navy, there is an active shooter reported inside the Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters building on the Washington Navy Yard. Shots were reported fired around 8:20 Monday morning.

D.C. Metro Police Chief Cathy Lanier confirmed there were 12 fatalities in the shooting.

"I'm deeply shocked and saddened by the shooting this morning at the Navy Yard," said Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. I have complete confidence in our first responders, and I continue to be completely focused on this very difficult situation."

Emergency personnel is on scene and an emergency shelter has been setup for Navy Yard personnel.

About 3,000 people work at the Naval Sea Systems Command's headquarters.

A number of agencies are investigating the incident including the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, D.C. Metro Police, and the FBI which has lead.
