Ski resorts all over Vermont are planning their workforce already for this year's skiing season.
200 people make Sugarbush Resort function during the summer. But that doesn't come close to what will happen in a few months.
“We have that real bump for the winter season," said Candice White, VP of Communications at Sugarbush Resort.
The workforce there more than quadruples to 1,000 employees and they're looking for those people now.
“Right now we've got close to 30 positions open that we are currently hiring for,” said White. “We're always looking for snowmakers this time of year. That's a seasonal job. It's a pretty cool job. You're out in the middle of the night. It's quiet. It's cold but you're really in on the action."
The same thing happens at Bolton Valley Resort come winter. 350 work the slopes there.
“Lodging, food and beverage, mountain operations, ski school,” explained Josh Arneson from Bolton Valley Resort. “We require a lot of people so we're looking for people who can do all sorts of things from working inside in the kitchen to working outside on the lifts and everything in between."
According to a UVM study, 23% of Vermont employees work for the tourism industry.
But in fact, state Labor Department statistics show that Vermont employment peaks in the summer and not the winter.
But when it comes to ski resorts, winter is the time to clock in for work.
"(WHITE) It really is a team environment here,” said White. “Sugarbush's brand promise is 'Be Better Here.' And we make that promise to our customers but also to our staff."
Both Sugarbush and Bolton Valley have posted jobs and job fair dates on their websites.
