Steidl Leads UVM in Second Half Rally Over UNH; Voelkel Becomes Cats' All-Time Leading Rebounder

On the night when senior Brian Voelkel became the all-time leading rebounder at the University of Vermont freshman Kurt Steidl scored 16 points to help lead the Vermont Catamounts to a 57-40 victory over New Hampshire in America East men's basketball action at Patrick Gymnasium.

BURLINGTON, Vt. - On the night when senior Brian Voelkel became the all-time leading rebounder at the University of Vermont with 15 caroms, freshman Kurt Steidl scored 16 points, 13 in the second half, to help lead the Vermont Catamounts to a 57-40 victory over New Hampshire in America East men's basketball action at Patrick Gymnasium.

Vermont, which wraps up a stretch of three games in five days, extends its win streak to seven straight games and moves to 11-8 overall and 5-0 in America East. New Hampshire falls to 3-15 and 1-4 in league play.

The Catamounts trailed 30-20 at the half after the Wildcats shot 52.4 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes. UVM struggled to find its offensive rhythm in the first half, shooting 7-for-23 (30.4%) from the floor.

UVM rallied in the second half, out scoring the Wildcats 37-10 over the final 20 minutes.

Trailing 35-24 with 15:42 remaining in the game, the Catamounts exploded for a 19-0 run behind five consecutive 3-pointers and 11 points from Steidl to pull out in front 43-35 with 9:29 left in the contest.

Vermont pushed its lead to double digits on a pair of free throws from Hector Harold and another basket by Steidl and maintained a comfortable lead over the final five minutes of the game to post its fifth win in six meetings over New Hampshire.

Steidl finished the night shooting 6-10 from the field and was a perfect 4-for-4 from 3-point range in 19 minutes off the bench. Sandro Carissimo added 11 points and six rebounds and Voelkel added seven points and seven assists to go along with his rebound milestone.

Jacoby Armstrong paced New Hampshire with 11 points and eight rebounds, while teammate Jordon Bronner added 10 points.

Vermont continues America East action at Stony Brook on Friday (Jan. 24). Tipoff between the league leaders is set for 9 p.m. at Pritchard Gymnasium. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU and can also be heard on ESPN 101.3 FM (online: 1013ESPN.com).

NOTES: Voelkel grabbed his record breaking rebound at the 11:27 mark of the first half ... He passed the mark of 1,054 career caroms set by former UVM great Kevin Roberson '92 ... Voelkel now has 1,065 and ranks fifth all-time among America East rebounding leaders ... Voelkel also reached the 600-assist mark and is 25 shy of passing Mike Trimboli '09 for that all-time mark at UVM ... The Catamounts are holding America East opponents to 43.8 points per game and have not allowed an opponent to score 60 in the last seven contests ... UVM turned the ball over just four times against UNH, and committed zero turnovers in the second half ... Sandro Carissimo climbed closer to the 1,000-point milestone and is 20 points shy of the mark.
