The small ‘parklet’ was an architecture project, by Vermont Tech. They designed it, acquired permits, and built it. Students received some grant money and fundraised for the rest of the 10 thousand dollars needed to build the parklet. Their professor says this project is an important 'hands on experience.'
"What’s really important about our education is not only designing things but learning how to build them and apply them and in a case like this being able to land it right in the community where the school is. So it's an applied design and build experience that I think is very much is about what the education at VT Tech is about," said Ward Joyce, a Professor of Architecture at VT Tech.
The students completed the parklet in partnership with Montpelier Alive, a non-profit dedicated to sprucing up the city.
The seating area will be in place on State Street for at least the next two summers.
