For the people out there who are trying to lose weight and get into shape -- have you heard the advice, eat several small meals throughout the day to help you avoid hunger pangs and shed the pounds? Well a new study might be putting some cold water on that idea.

The advice for so long was to eat five, or even six small meals each day to keep your metabolism going but this new study really shakes things up again. It says that eating just two big meals a day may be the way to lose weight.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are usually the three core meals of the day but this study says, if you want to lose weight you may want to forgo dinner. Yes, dinner.

Researchers from the Czech Republic put this to the test -- studying more than 50 patients with type 2 diabetes over five months. Half ot the group followed a diet with three main meals and three small snacks each day. The other half ate a big breakfast between 6 am and 10 am and then a large lunch between noon and 4 pm -- but that's it.

They found that both groups lost weight but the group eating only two large meals lost the most.

The researchers say eating fewer, bigger meals leads to lower fasting blood sugar levels, which means the body's insulin production worked more efficiently.

Most of us eat the majority of our calories at night at dinner, when we're less likely to be active -- so the idea of skipping dinner may make sense on paper -- but probably won't go over well in many households.

So the takeaway, according to a diet and nutrition expert, don't skip dinner but perhaps change the size of our meals -- eat a large breakfast, eat a large lunch, and then eat a smaller dinner, keeping that last meal of the day lower in calories.
