Thousands fill trash bags for Green Up day!

About 15,000 Vermonters collect nearly 4,000 bags of Trash.
ESSEX JUNCTION, VT- About 15,000 Vermonters collect nearly 4,000 bags of trash for Green Up Day!

The annual statewide event happened Saturday.

People organized teams, or did their part individually by picking up garbage along streets, highways, parks, and other public places.

It's all about getting the community together in order to make drastic improvements to our surroundings in just one day.

Since Green Up Day launched in 1970, it's become a time honored tradition.

"I really think its a good thing for the community. No one like the look of trash on the ground and i think its something people should get more involved in," said Brittany Moore, Essex High School Air Force Jr. ROTC.

"The kids really enjoy being outside and doing this out here and doing great things for the community. Thats what we do with the core. Thats what we teach the kids and we teach the importance of being a good community member," said Jim Spaulding, Retired U.S. Air Colonel

However, cuts in corporate funding threaten the program.

The President of Green Up Vermont said if the current funding trend continues, Green Up Day could end after 2015.
