SCHROON, N.Y. - A traffic stop on I-87 near exit 28 on Sunday leads to drug arrests.
New York State Police say they stopped a Volkswagon Jetta that was traveling north at 92 MPH in a 65 MPH zone. The driver, Evelyn Person, 32, of Brooklyn, N.Y., was driving with a suspended license.
One of the passengers, Christine Perez, 31, of Bronx, N.Y., was found to be unconscious. Police contacted the Schroon Lake Ambulance to help Perez. Once they arrived, police say, Perez became combative and uncooperative. Police helped restrain Perez, but in the process a trooper was grabbed,scratched, and struck. The trooper was transported to Moses Luddington Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries.
Perez was transported to Glens Falls Hospital for a medical evaluation. Police say at the hospital, medical personnel found several balloons containing synthetic marihuana.
Another passenger, 40-year-old Lisa Montanino, of Brooklyn, N.Y., had five different pills that were tested to be opiates. She was charged with five counts of 7th degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, and five counts of a controlled substance outside of its original container.
Police say a fourth passenger, Paola Castillo, 24, of Queens, N.Y., was found in possession of a controlled substance that was not prescribed to her. She also had a small amount of marihuana inside one of her boots. Castillo is charged with 7th degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of marijuana.
The driver was charged with 3rd degree aggravated unlicensed operation and ticketed for speeding.
Police say after Perez was released from the hospital she was charged with obstruction of governmental administration and for the possession of synthetic marihuana. She was arraigned and was remanded to Essex County Jail in Lieu of $2,000 cash bail or $4,000 bond.
Person, Montanino, and Castillo were arraigned and Person and Castillo were remanded to Essex County Jail in lieu of $500 cash bail or $1,000 bond. Montanino was released on her own recognizance.
All four are due back in court at a later date.
