Two Vermont Independent Bookstores Get Cash from Famous Author

James Patterson, best known as the author of the Alex Cross series, is spreading some of his personal wealth.
BURLINGTON - James Patterson, best known as the author of the Alex Cross series, is spreading some of his personal wealth.

Phoenix Books was one of two Vermont independent bookstores that received $5,000 from Patterson. He announced in September he'd be giving away $1 million to indie bookstores all across the country, telling the New York Times he wants bookstores to still be able to compete with e-books, and he wants people to frequent these stores more.

Co-owner of Phoenix Books Mike Desanto says the store sent an application detailing how they would spend the money. They gave a few ideas for community outreach projects.

"We might even be able to generate interest in having a bookmobile go out and visit schools and libraries, community events. And offer books in that way, which is my particular favorite," Desanto said. The store received their $5,000 check Wednesday.

Norwich Bookstore in Norwich, Vt. also got a grant from Patterson. They plan to use the cash for programming geared toward kids, like author events.
