UPDATE: Police ID Drowning Victim As Plattsburgh Teen

Police say it found the body of 17-year old Taoufik Maknani of Plattsburgh down river from the scene Thursday night. Other still missing.
WILMINGTON, NY -

New York State Police have named a person who drowned on the Ausable River on Thursday.

There is still another person missing.

Police say Thursday night it found the body of 17-year old Taoufik Maknani of Plattsburgh down river from where the group had been swimming earlier that day.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday. Crews are still looking for the other victim. This comes after hours of searching through the Ausable River.

Wilmington, New York was swarming with search crews, beginning just after 2 pm.

“New York State Police and New York State Forest rangers started receiving multiple calls of swimmers in distress in the flume fall on the west side of the Ausable River near Route 86 in Wilmington,” explained Zone C Commander John Tibbitts Jr with the New York State Police.

Police say 2 people were swimming when the current pulled them under.

“At that time, uniformed troopers, forest rangers, fire department personnel and New York State Aviation responded to the area to begin to search for 2 subjects that went into the water and had not yet been seen,” said Commander Tibbitts.

The search effort was extensive. “It's been a tremendous turnout for assistance here in what may be a terrible tragedy,” said Capt. John Streiff, NY State Department of Environmental Conservation.

It wasn't only officials who were on the lookout. Locals were keeping their eyes peeled to the waters too.

The waters were higher and stronger than usual after heavy rains the day before.

"I'll take the opportunity to say with the amount of rain we've had over the last couple days, we've got upwards of 2-3 inches, it's not the best time to be in swiftly moving water, such as the flume today,” said Capt. Streiff. “It can be very dangerous and it turns out it may be that way."
