Vermont's Western Rail Will Expand After USDOT Grant

MONTPELIER, Vt. - Vermont's Western Rail will be expanded thanks to a $9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The project costs $18.5 million and will fix up 20 miles of the Vermont Railway from Rutland to Lester, replace 9 miles of rail, and allow for future expansion of Amtrak's Ethan Allen service.

"The western part of the state is economically challenged because they've been transportation challenged," Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin said.

State officials say the project will create jobs and will allow faster movement of goods and people between Bennington, Rutland and Burlington.
