MONTPELIER, Vt. - Vermont Attorney General Bill Sorrell issued a formal opinion that the state's campaign finance contribution limits remain in effect through December 31, 2014. The formal opinion comes after the Vermont Secretary of State inquiring whether the new campaign finance limits go into effect for the 2014 election cycle.
A press release says Act 90 revised the campaign finance laws and established new contributions limits in Vermont in 2015. While the Act contained an error, Attorney General Sorrell based his decision on legislative deliberations that made clear that campaign finance changes would come after the 2014 elections.
The current limits prohibit a candiate to accept contributions totaling more than $1,000 from a single source or $3,000 from a political committee (PAC) for any election. The limits also prevent a PAC or political party from accepting contributions of more than $2,000 from a single source, PAC, or political party in any two year election cycle.
