ALBANY, N.Y. - The New York State Tax Department announced $1 billion in refunds for 1.1 million taxpayers.
The department is also asking New Yorkers to take advantage of free e-filing for faster refunds.
The average refund to date is $906.
“Most New Yorkers are eligible for free e-filing options that result in fewer errors on returns and faster refunds,” said New York Tax Commissioner Thomas H. Mattox. “Visit our Web site to learn more about the options available to you.”
Those options include the following:
- Have your tax return prepared by certified volunteers. Taxpayers with incomes under $52,000 are eligible to have an IRS-certified volunteer prepare their return at no cost. Visit the IRS' website for more information.
- Visit an AARP Tax Aide free location. The AARP has 300+ free tax preparation tax sites in New York that do not have income or age limits. Find sites near you.
- Visit the New York State Tax Department website to access free tax preparation software. If your income is less than $58,000, you're eligible to have your federal and state return prepared using free software.
- File your state return directly with the tax department. Anyone who has already filed their federal return or who only need to file a state return can file directly with the department on their website.
The department says the average refund for e-filers is issued in 22 days while refunds for paper filers can take 8 to 12 weeks.
