WINOOSKI, Vt. - A J.F.K. Elementary School 5th grader won the VT Doodle 4 Google Competition nomination. Google announced the winners Tuesday from each state.

The Doodle 4 Google competition is a contest open to K-12 students to redesign the Google logo inspired by a theme. This year's theme is "If I could invent one thing to make the world a better place..."

A press release says Penny Ly's doodle, Double A: Artificial Air, depicts artificial plants which would convert greenhouse gases into oxygen. Ly's doodle was selected from more than 100,000 submissions.

The public can vote to determine the five national finalists, one from each age group. Voting is open from April 29 to May 9. Vote for your favorite design

Google will announce the five national finalists and one of them as the national winner on May 21 at an awards ceremony at its headquarters in Mountainview, Calif.

A press release says the winner will work with Google to animate their design. The animated design will then be placed on Google's homepage on June 9. The winner will also take home a $30,000 college scholarship and his/her school will receive a $50,000 Google for Education grant to help improve a computer or technology program.
