Divers Find the Body of Missing Shelburne, Vt. Man

New York State Police say a Shelburne, Vermont man is dead after cliff jumping into Lake Champlain.
WESTPORT, N.Y. - New York State Police say a Shelburne, Vermont man is dead after cliff jumping into Lake Champlain.

Crews say they have recovered the body of 39-year-old Michael Mindell after a two-day search.

Mindell had not been seen since Saturday. Police say Mindell and friends were boating on Lake Champlain when they stopped at the Palisades Cliffs near Westport.

"At that time Mindell climbed up the cliffs to a height of approximately 150 feet, then jumped off the cliff into the lake. After hitting the lake and going under water, Mindell did not resurface," says Lt. John Coryea, New York State Police.

Coryea says the lake is more than 200 feet deep in that area.

The search included teams from the U.S. Coast Guard and Westport and Port Henry Fire Departments. They were joined by divers from New York State Police who found Mindell Monday.

"The body was found at a depth of approximately 156 feet. We do not have any indication at this point what, what killed him," says Coryea.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday and police say it will also determine if alcohol or drugs played any part.
