Donate Food to Pay Off South Burlington Library Book Fines

In December, you can donate canned goods to help pay off your fines.
SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - In December, you can donate canned goods to help pay off your fines.

For the last 9 years, the South Burlington library has held Food for Fines. Each donated item earns you $2 toward paying off your fine.

Organizers say it's a way for people to pay up and help the community.

"People don't like paying library fines but they are more than happy to donate to a good cause. We have a lot more success with people paying off their fines with a donated item then we do getting them to pay just regular fines," Louise Murphy, South Burlington Library Director, said.

Each year, the library collects on average 450 pounds of food, which is donated to the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf.

The donation goes until the end of December.
