Fire Leaves Several Winooski, Vt. Families Homeless

Several Winooski families need to find a new place to live after their apartments were destroyed by a fire Thursday.
WINOOSKI, Vt. - Several Winooski families need to find a new place to live after their apartments were destroyed by a fire Thursday.

Sarah Little says she had recently moved into an apartment on the second floor and was home when the fire started.

"All I saw was black smoke when I came out of my room. That's all I could see was black smoke. I get down, I was the last one to get out when I got to the bottom of the stairs there were flames. It singed my hair," says Little.

Little says she thought her dog had followed her out. On Friday, she found out her dog had not made it.

"She's my best friend," says Little.

Firefighters say the ten people who lived there are all safe. On Friday, investigators looked for what started the fire.

"It's difficult this time because the building is in bad shape and beginning to collapse on us and we have to shore things up as we're going through," says Chief David Bergeron, Winooski Fire Department.

The fire also damaged an apartment building next door and 11 people from there are temporarily out of their homes. Other neighbors were forced from their homes because of the smoke.

"I'm just glad everybody made it out," says Katherine Whalon, who lives nearby.

Firefighters says the cause of the fire was accidental because of an electrical short. They say the building will have to be torn down.
