BURLINGTON, Vt. - According to Becker's Hospital Review, Fletcher Allen Health Care is named one of the top 50 greenest health care organizations. Hospitals were ranked based on consistent efforts to lower their carbon footprint and operate sustainability, among other factors.
A press release says about half of the food served to patients at Fletcher Allen is locally sourced. The hospital tries to limit the amount of meat purchased with therapeutic antibiotics.
Energy conservation efforts have also helped Fletcher Allen save more than 5.8 million kilowatt hours of electricity between 2008 and 2013.
Becker's used date from multiple organizations to develop the list including the Environmental Protection Agency and Health Care Without Harm. A press release says Health Care Without Harm consists of 520 members from around the world looking to transform the health care industry.
