RUTLAND, Vt. - Union members from UE Local 332 in Fort Edward, N.Y. will picket the appearance by General Electric CEO Jeffrey Immelt's visit in Rutland, Vt. Wednesday.
A press release says the workers are fighting GE's announced plan to close the Fort Edward plant by September 2014. The company plans to move all the work to Clearwater, Florida.
"Closing our plant will hurt 200 families of GE employees and many more families in our country," said Local 332 President Scott Gates. "It will have a devastating effect on small businesses in our area, costing many more people their jobs, reducing local services, harming a lot of people."
A press release says if GE closes the Fort Edward plant, it will cost 178 hourly production workers and 20 salaried employees.
Immelt is scheduled to speak at Rutland's Paramount Theater at 5 p.m. Union leaders say they will begin their protest in front of the theater at 4:30 p.m.
