NY Homeowners Reminded to Register for Basic STAR

New Yorkers are being reminded that the deadline to apply for a property tax break is approaching.
New Yorkers are being reminded that the deadline to apply for a property tax break is approaching.

The state tax department says homeowners need to register for Basic STAR by December 31.

The department says the average homeowner saves $700 each year from this exemption. But, they need to register with them—one time only—to continue receiving this break in 2014 and beyond.

“Don’t risk losing hundreds of dollars in savings each year,” said Commissioner Thomas H. Mattox.  “Join the two-plus million homeowners who registered quickly and easily on our Web site or by calling us.”

Homeowners are entitled to the exemption if their family income is under $500,000.

To register online, click here or call 518-457-2036.

The department is offering extended STAR Hotline hours - 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.
