Police: Emaciated Dogs Rescued in Richford, VT Were 24 Hours From Death

Police rescued two dogs that were extremely emaciated from a camper in Richford.

RICHFORD, Vt. - Police rescued two dogs that were extremely emaciated from a camper in Richford. Both dogs survived.

A press release says the dogs were located on December 16 without food, water, or proper shelter. At the time of the rescue, temperatures were in the single digits.

The dogs appeared to be approximately 20 pounds underweight and suffered from a severe case of hook worms. According to doctors, the dogs were 24 hours from death.

Police say they arrested Randall Sheperd, 52, and Casey Sheperd, 19, of Richford, Vt. on Friday. They are both being charged with two counts of animal cruelty.

Both are scheduled to appear in court in February.

The dogs were treated at the Newport Animal Hospital. They are currently receiving further treatment at the Franklin County Humane Society.
