Self-Proclaimed "Gem Hunter" Shares Story of Middle East Travels

BURLINGTON - An American who has been traveling back and forth from the U.S. to Afghanistan is sharing his story--and it's not about war.

Gary Bowersox is a jeweler, but he called himself "The Gem Hunter."

He mines in the mountains of Afghanistan with locals, teaching them how to mine, blast, collect and identify stones.

He says he wants to help the gem industry in that country.

"For every miner, that feeds eight people," he explained of how the industry affects Afghan villagers. "If they can advance and go into the cutting of the stones, that will feed another eight people for every person involved in the mining," he said.

He does want to teach the Afghan people to cut stones, especially the women; he hopes it will be a way for many of them to work outside the home.

Bowersox is from Hawaii, but is touring the U.S. and holding jewelry expositions. Today's was at Designers' Circle Jewelers on Church Street.
