NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Nearly 600 members of the Vermont Army National Guard were recognized for their courage, honor, and valor Sunday.

The third battalion, 172nd infantry regiment was awarded the Valorous Unit Award.

The rare honor recognized the unit's heroism against an armed enemy while serving in Afghanistan in 2010.

"This award is not given out very frequently. It's the equivelent of an individual recieving a silver star medal. It really shows the dedication and the professionalism of this unit and how well they performed while they were down range," says Captain Jasen Boyd, Vermont National Guard.

The company medic, Michael Mulcahy, was also honored. He received the bronze star for bravery.
