Weather Halts Search for Missing Man in Lake Champlain

Police say they have suspended the search for a man in Lake Champlain due to high wind and waves.
COLCHESTER, Vt. - Police say they have suspended the search for a man in Lake Champlain due to high wind and waves.

The 23-year-old man, who has not been identified, was boating with five friends Friday night when he jumped into the lake.

It was near the mouth of Lamoille River.

Police say the man was struggling due to choppy conditions, and his friends tried to rescue him and called 911.

Several agencies searched for the man Friday night, including helicopters from the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Border Patrol.

Saturday morning the agencies continued searching the lake, but suspended search efforts at 12:30 p.m. due to high winds above 37 knots.

Police say they plan to resume searching when weather conditions improve.
