A satellite is now in space that will peer down on Earth with incredible resolution.
SkyTracker Weather Blog by Meteorologist Steve Glazier:

DigitalGlobe has launched a very high resolution satellite into space that will be able to give detail down to one foot resolution, which is five times better than anything out there now. That's according to the website and the article written about it here, on www.digitalglobe.com. It's called WorldView-3.

The successful launch from California happened on Wednesday. The satellite will feed back incredible pictures used for natural disasters, manmade crises, cultural venues, natural sites, defense solutions, geopolitical events, and more.

If you get a chance, check out the images here at this link.

This is a pretty close look at Earth. According to the CEO this satellite will be able to see through smoke and under the surface of the sea. In terms of weather, WorldView-3 is equipped with infrared capability to accurately image dust, haze, smoke, fog, and other airborne particles. It also has this, CAVIS. That stands for a cloud, aerosol, water vapor, ice, and snow atmospheric correction instrument, which monitors the atmosphere and corrects data for an unprecedented level of consistency.

The power of this thing may be pretty scary to some. Pictures can tell how healthy a tree is or see how many empty seats there are in a ballpark. You can watch the launch of this here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txWFxZGlL8I#t=94
