Brittney Kelson is a feature reporter for Local 22 & Local 44 News. Brit joined the team in June 2011.
Where did you grow up?
Des Moines, IA
Where did you go to school?
I graduated from the University of Iowa, where I studied broadcast journalism and political science. During my time there, I worked at the TV station, The Daily Iowan. I reported, produced and anchored the show that aired five days a week. I also interned at WMAQ in Chicago and in Des Moines, during the 2008, presidential caucuses. I had the privilege of getting to see firsthand what it was like to interview national politicians, including Hillary Clinton, Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee and I was able to interview President Obama.
Where have you worked previously?
I previously worked at the CBS/ FOX affiliate in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. There I started as the morning reporter, going live every morning for breaking news, weather events and feature stories. During my time on that show, my team was awarded an Emmy for best newscast. The show featured our live team coverage during a major blizzard in Eastern Iowa.
What was the most challenging story you've ever done?
I had an exclusive interview with the wife of a man facing life in prison after a massive immigration raid in Iowa. It was a difficult story because the interview was in the midst of his trial. The case was receiving a lot of attention and no one in his family had spoken out publicly, so I felt a lot of pressure to show the other side of his life in a fair and balanced way.
Who is your favorite national correspondent?
Robin Meade, HLN
What are your hobbies?
Since moving to Vermont, I have fallen in love with the mountains. I love to snowboard and snowshoe in the winter. In the summer, you can find me hiking or on Lake Champlain. Whether it’s wake boarding, wake surfing or paddle boarding, I love getting out and exploring our area.
What is your favorite food?
It’s hard to just name one. I love finding new local restaurants and trying a dish I haven’t had. My list of favorite foods is always expanding. I also love to cook and try new recipes. If you have any good suggestions, send them my way!
