Hours-long standoff with police ends in Hardwick with no injuries

A man was taken into custody early Tuesday after a lengthy standoff with police that began when he barricaded himself and a small child inside a home in Hardwick.

Kelly Howard, 34, who police say was armed with a gun, was taken into custody without incident.

Police say they were called to the 2123 Rt. 16 in Hardwick for a report of domestic dispute shortly after 5 pm Monday. When they arrived, police learned Kelly had assaulted a resident of the home.

He refused Hardwick officers’ orders to come outside, eventually barricading himself in the house along with the child, whose age was not provided. Hostage negotiators with Vermont State Police were called in and after several hours, Kelly was taken into custody without incident

He was charged with domestic assault and transported to Northeast Correctional Center. He is due in court Tuesday.
