The Winooski Bridge is nearly 90 years old and it’s about time for some TLC.
The Chittenden County Planning Commission has just started a scope survey of the bridge. That means they are looking at what needs to be done to it and why.
Currently, a project to repair the railings is planned for the upcoming year. However, the scope survey is in preparation of a much bigger project– total bridge replacement.
Peter Keating is the Senior Transportation Planner at Chittenden County Planning Commission. He said 30,000 people drive on the Winooski Bridge every day. The total replacement will occur in the next five to ten years.
“We’ll have to go near and far to let people know we’re doing this seek their comments because it will affects tens of thousands of people on a daily basis,” Keating said.
To be clear, Keating said they are in the very early stages of this project. They are going over options of how to replace the bridge and figuring out how to pay for it. Keating said it’s too early to put an estimated price tag on the project, but it will be a matter of millions of dollars.
