Good news from the New York State Commission, folks who have a 518 area code won’t have to change their phone numbers.

The New York State Commission has approved an area code overlay for 17 counties in the 518 area code region.

Franklin, Essex, and Clinton Counties will be part of this new plan.

Under it, existing telephone numbers will remain unchanged.  All new telephone numbers would be assigned a new area code.

The new area code had to be added because the commission said they were running out of phone numbers for the 518 area code. The plan was to either have an overlay with new numbers or change the area code for a portion of the 518 region.

Officials say public hearings were held a few weeks ago, where sixty percent of people who gave input said they preferred the overlay plan.

This change will be phased in over the next few months.
