Burlington Teachers Strike; Community Scrambles

No teachers, meant no school Thursday for students across the Burlington School District which left some parents frustrated.

“It’s frustrating that our teachers are not getting the support that they need which means our kids aren’t getting the support that they need,” said Rachel Fraumann, has two children who attend Burlington school and is a pastor at Burlington’s First United Methodist Church.

Fraumann said one of her friends was left scrambling as a result of the strike, “I kind of took his kids on, my kids came over and then a few other kids came over, we’re watching movies down in the church basement right now just trying to make everybody happy.”

Fraumann says she is standing by the teachers, she feels they’re not getting a fair deal.

“This has become a top heavy organization, we’ve got more administrative positions being filled of late than we have of support on the ground,” explained Fraumann.

While Fraumann is supporting the teachers and their fight, there are plenty of people who have taken to Local 22 & Local 44 News’ Facebook page to share their frustrations.

Christina Baker said, “I’m so glad I got my kids out of the Burlington district so they’re not dealing with this. It makes it hard for families.”

Kevin Domina added, “Just fire them already. Get the kids back to school.”

Fraumann said, “We really need to come up with a system that is working for everybody… It would be nice when people come to the table everybody is working for the kids.”

With school not in session, several organizations have opened their doors including Burlington’s Boys and Girls Club.

“Today we opened at nine, we had a plan for the last week it wasn’t a surprise to anyone but we were making call at nine o-clock last night to activate that plan,” said Tanya Benosky, executive director.

The strike also led to the cancelation of all district activities including sports and after school programs. However, lunch is being made available for students at their respective schools.
