Local 22 & Local 44 News has obtained previously sealed court documents about an employee of a local residential youth treatment center, accused of lewd and lascivious conduct with a 15 year-old girl.
Chittenden Unit for Special Investigations Detective Lawton says Earl Katon, 42, also known as Earl Baker, was arrested March 14.
Katon faced a judge the following day, but court documents were not made public at the time. Documents were made available to Local 22 & Local 44 News on March 22.
In an affidavit, Detective Morgan Lawton says she had probable cause to believe Katon committed the crimes of Luring a Child, Lewd and Lascivious Conduct with a Child and Attempted Use of a Child In a Sexual Performance.
Court documents show Katon communicated with a 15 year-old via social media messaging, and asked her to provide him nude photographs in exchange for money.
The affidavit goes on to show Katon provided the girl with a sex toy, and then told her he fantasized about seeing her use it.
Katon is also alleged to have hugged the girl while alone with her, placing his hands on her.
Court documents show this was unwanted by the victim, and made her uncomfortable.
The affidavit says when Katon was interviewed, he initially denied the allegations, but later admitted to buying the girl a sex toy when confronted.
Court documents show the girl turned over a tobacco vaporizer pen and a sex toy, and said they were provided to her by Katon.
In the affidavit, the girl says she and Katon communicated over social media for at least three weeks, and that Katon said he had photographs of other girls on his phone.
The girl alleges Katon planned to supply her with a phone, which she would use to take the photographs, and then return to Katon.
She added Katon told her he did the same with other juveniles in the past, as said he told her he “had sex” with other “girls.”
Photographs of conversations between the girl and Katon were provided to police.
The photos show communication over Snapchat, Facebook, and via text.
Court documents later revealed in another instance, Katon purchased alcohol for the girl, the same day he gave her a vape.
In mid-February, court documents allege Katon gave the girl a sex toy and told her to use it.
In another instance, court documents show the girl said she consumed six alcoholic beverages in fifteen minutes, and then considered getting a rape kit the next morning because she “just really didn’t know anything.”
Katon is scheduled to appear before a judge on April 20.
He remains in custody at Northwest State Correctional Facility.
