Crews Battle Fire on UVM’s Campus

Crews battled a four-alarm fire on the University of Vermont campus.

The fire broke out at Torrey Hall just after 8 a.m. Thursday. The historic building is located near the Ira Allen Chapel off of Colchester Ave.

The building has two classrooms, and it used primarily for research by UVM’s Biology Department and Plant Biology Department, according to UVM spokesman Enrique Corredera.

Corredera says the fire was sparked by the soldering of copper material on the roof, which he says was part of a summer renovation project.

No injuries have been reported.

Burlington Fire Chief Steven Locke said between 60 to 70 firefighters were at the scene.  The fire was contained at around 12 p.m.

UVM officials say the building was constructed in 1863, and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

“With 300,000 samples, it is the third largest herbarium in New England and the largest Vermont flora collection in the world, said Corredera in a written statement.
