Today is national awareness day for Earned Income Tax Credit, and in the Adirondack Region free tax help is available for those who qualify.

The Earned Income Tax Credit Coalition has set up sites in Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties.  Volunteers will help people file tax returns electronically.

Those making under $53,267 may be eligible.

“Many people qualify for EITC for the first time this year and don’t know it because either their income declined, their marital status changed, or their families grew in 2015,” says Drake Turner, Adult Nutrition Initiatives Manager at Hunger Free Vermont.

To find out if you qualify for the EITC, call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 or visit the online tool EITC Assistant. For help preparing your taxes for free, dial 2-1-1 to make an appointment in your community with a certified volunteer.
