Emergency weekend shelter open at Burlington church

News

If you need a place to get out of the bitter cold in Burlington this weekend, you’ll be able to do it at First United Methodist Church.

The Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity is working with a wide range of partners to open the shelter at the church on Buell Street. It’ll be open Saturday, Sunday and Monday nights.

The Red Cross is providing cots for the shelter. UVM Medical Center is offering linens. The Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf will contribute food items, and Americorps and MedicalCorps will help provide volunteers to staff the shelter.

“The purpose of this is so people have a warm, safe place to be,” said Jan Demers, Executive Director of the CVOEO. “We don’t enforce too many rules, we just want people to be warm and we want them to be safe.”

The shelter is low-barrier and has room for 27 people.
