Come next year the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf will expand.
The project will extend the building out toward North Winooski Avenue, increasing space for staff and kitchen programs.
There will also be other improvement made to increase accessibility for guests with limited mobility.
The project comes in light of an increase in need.
“people are just getting hungrier, they are finding at the end of the month they just can’t pay their bills and buy their families food at the same time… the number of visits that we’ve seen has increased from about 30,000 a few years to in the past year we saw 50,000,” said Kelly Saunders of the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf.
The project is expected to be complete next fall.
