Former Treasurer Pleads Not Guilty to Embezzlement

The former treasurer of the Isle La Motte Fire Company, pleaded not guilty to two counts of embezzlement.
 
56 year-old Scott Newman was in Vermont Superior Court in North Hero.
   
Newman is accused of taking more than 10-thousand dollars from the company.
   
Court records show Newman was struggling to find a job and his marriage was failing.
   
In the paperwork, Newman admitted to the company’s board of directors he took the money and said he returned what he believed to be the full amount.

Local 22 reached out to Defense Attorney Rob Kaplan.

He declined to comment as he left the courthouse Thursday.
   
Each felony charge carries up to 10 years in prison.
