After 14 hours and hundreds of calls, Wednesday’s telethon with the American Red Cross and Gardener’s Supply Company raised over $23,000.
It’s money that will go a long way to help those communities turned upside down by three Category 4 storms.
Gardener’s Supply Company in Burlington joined the American Red Cross for a one day telethon, broadcast by Local 22 & Local 44.
The company donated the use of its call center.
“They knew we had the resource, and and they called us and we said, ‘that’s a great idea.’ And so we really, just like a week ago, came together; we bent over backwards with the phone company to make it all happen,” said Jim Feinson, President of Gardener’s Supply Company.
Maribell Ibarra just started volunteering with the Red Cross.
The longtime Underhill resident has several family members in Puerto Rico, which was ravaged by Hurricane Maria.
“The situation is awful. The destruction was everywhere. North, south east, west; there was not a place that was spared. I heard people were without power. There are people who live in 15 stories of a building and they have to walk up and down the stairs to get water. Water is hard to get, food is hard to get, especially the people in the mountains. There is so much destruction on all the roads,” said Ibrarra.
Ibarra is traveling on her own dime to rescue her father, whose roof was torn off his home.
Michael Macconnell is a board member with the American Red Cross Vermont/New Hampshire Region.

“It’s not a quick fix, so we’re raising money to continue to help the people who have been sort of victimized by these historic hurricanes,” said Macconnell.
