PLATTSBURGH NY – Move in day for Incoming Freshman at SUNY Plattsburgh took place August 23rd.
Students were welcomed with newly renovated residence halls.
College move in day can be one of the most exciting days for incoming students, even more so, when the residence halls have more than a fresh coat of paint.
Stephen Mathews is the director of campus housing and community living and said, “We have new windows new mechanical, new lighting and a lot of new amenities for our students and we are expecting to save about 20 percent energy cost in the building.”
First year living area, Whiteface Hall was completely renovated along with bathrooms in another building. It is all a part of a long term plan.
“We’re working our way through all the residents’ halls and it really has to do with age. When we are renovating them, it’s the first real renovation that’s been done since they were erected,” Said Mathews.
Some students can’t wait to make them their own.
“It’s beautiful I’m so lucky to be in this dorm,” said incoming freshman Mollie Drew
“It’s so homey especially once we start putting all of our posters up and everything,” said another incoming freshman
For some, moving away from home can be hard
Freshman Taijah Niel said, “I’m anxious and i’m also very not like nervous but i’m just use to having everything at home and being situated there.”
Mathews hopes the new renovations will help the students feel more comfortable.
“We think it’s really important that our residence halls students feel like they are building as a community and that each of their floors is a community,” said Mathews.
He said renovations are all essential, in creating a place of community.
“Part of that is renovating the space that you are in so that you feel comfortable and it has the amenities that you come to expect,” said Mathews.
The school is currently working on Kent hall across the street from Whiteface hall. They are also working on changing communal bathrooms in all the residential halls to single stall type bathrooms.
