St. Albans police are looking for a man armed with a gun who led them on a high speed chase.

Officers stopped 38-year old Michael Rich of Swanton early Friday morning for driving an illegal vehicle. During questioning, an officer noticed a hand grip to a firearm sticking out of his pocket.

When he was asked to get out of the car, Rich sped off down Maquam Shore Road. He then turned onto Giroux Road where his speed reached 65 mph.

Because of dangerous road conditions due to rain and mud, police backed off pursuit.

Later that morning patrol officers found Rich’s abandoned vehicle at a farm on Lord Road. A search for Rich by the officers, U.S. Border Patrol, Vermont State Police and officers from Milton and Swanton turned up nothing.

Rich is wanted for several traffic violations committed during the chase.

Anyone with information is asked to contact St. Albans police (802) 524-2166.
