Barre opens public cooling shelters through Saturday

With dangerously high heat and humidity expected through the week, officials in Barre have announced the hours of operation for several cooling shelters.

According to the National Weather Service, Friday and Saturday will be the hottest days of the week, with highs in the mid-80s to low-90s and very humid.

The NWS warns that prolonged exposure or physical activity in such conditions can lead to heat stroke, heat cramps or heat exhaustion.

Here’s the schedule:

Wednesday:

  • Library, 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. (Alternative location at Barre City Hall 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Thursday:  

  • Good Shepherd Episcopal will serve breakfast early until 9 a.m.; 
  • Library, 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. (Alternative location at Barre City Hall 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Friday:

  • Breakfast @ First Church Universalist – early til 11 am –
  • Library, 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. (Alternative location at Barre City Hall 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.)

Saturday:

  • 7 am – 10 am Barre Congregational Church breafast til 10 am
  • Library, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
  • Faith Community Church, 2 – 7 p.m.
