Police arrested a man who broke into a Montpelier cannabis dispensary and tried to make off with several large plants
Matthew Demar, 39, of Berlin, was charged Monday with burglary, unlawful mischief and possession of burglar’s tools.
Demar was riding his bike on River Street when an officer on patrol noticed that he resembled the description of a suspect in a previous burglary of the dispensary, Vermont Patients Alliance.
The officer was watching the dispensary when he saw someone approach the front door and heard the sound of breaking glass. The officer then heard loud banging and crashing sounds coming form inside the building.
Demar was arrested after a brief struggle as he tried to walk out the broken front door carrying the plants.The suspect had also damaged several locked areas in the dispensary, police said.
On Monday morning September 18, 2018 Corporal Bean and Officer White apprehended a male suspect who was committing a burglary of the Vermont Patients Alliance Marijuana Dispensary located at #188 River Street in Montpelier, VT.
Corporal Bean was on patrol at approximately 4:28 AM in the early morning hours near the area of Formula Ford when he observed a suspicious male riding a bike on River Street towards Montpelier. Cpl. Bean observed that the male on the bicycle matched a general description of a suspect from a previous burglary investigation he had in which the same business (VT Patient Alliance Marijuana Dispensary) had been broken into and the suspect had left the scene on a bicycle.
Cpl. Bean passed the suspicious male on the bicycle and he proceeded to the area where he could observe #188 River Street and the general area of the Vermont Patient Alliance Marijuana Dispensary. While observing the location Cpl. Bean saw a shadow figure approach the building and then heard the sounds of glass breaking and observed a subject enter through the broken front door window and then heard loud banging and smashing sounds from inside the VT Patient Alliance Marijuana Dispensary. Cpl. Bean and Officer White set-up on the perimeter of the building, and a short time later, the suspect attempted to exit the building via the broken front door at which time Cpl. Bean and Officer White confronted the suspect and took him into custody after a brief struggle. The suspect was attempting to steal several large marijuana plants that had been growing inside the dispensary and he had damaged several locked areas inside the building.
The suspect was identified as Matthew Demar Age 39 of Berlin, VT. Demar was charged with Burglary, Unlawful Mischief, and Possession of Burglar’s Tools. He was later brought to Washington County Superior Court, Criminal Division to answer to those charges.
