Burlington elects three to Council, says no to downtown expansion

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Only one of three incumbents on the ballot managed to hold on to their City Council seats at Town Meeting Day in Burlington.

Meanwhile, voters rejected by nearly 700 votes a measure that would have allowed for the expansion of Burlington’s central district beyond Church Street. The charter change was defeated 4291-3615.

As the results came in, Mayor Miro Weinberger said the city was prepared if the measure failed.

“There’s a lot of questions that we aren’t at the stage of fully answering, perhaps if it doesn’t pass, they’ll be interest in developing some of the ideas a little further and then bringing it back to the voters,” Weinberger said.

In the East District council race, Progressive Jack Hanson Democrat defeated Democrat Richard Deane, who was looking for his second term on the council, by an unofficial 837 to 546 margin.

In the Central District, Perri Freeman defeated incumbent Jane Knodell by an unofficial 928 to 643 margin.

Knodell, who ran as an Independent, lost her Progressive endorsement after serving on the council for 19 years.

Two newcomers were on the ballot in the North District, where Democrat Franklin Paulino defeated Independent Kienan Christianson by an unofficial 1367 to 1135 margin.

Lastly, in the South District, incumbent Democrat Joan Shannon held on to her seat as she defeated Progressive Mohamed Jafar by an unofficial 1423 to 669 margin.

Voters also approved the Burlington School District’s 2019-2020 budget with nearly 70 percent of the vote. Superintendent Yaw Obeng released a statement after the budget passed.

“The additions and reductions proposed in this year’s budget are another step in the right direction towards reducing disparities in our system, closing the very real acheivement gap, and raising the bar for all of our students,” Obeng said.
