Two Burlington police officers who confiscated beer from minors during a December trafffic stop, then drank some of it when they went off duty, have been suspended without pay for three weeks.

Burlington Chief Brandon del Pozo said he “substantiated” the allegations made by other officers after an internal investigation by the department.

In a statement, del Pozo described the two officers as “forthcoming and contrite about what they had done.

“They understood that their actions were injurious to the reputation of all police officers, and could have cost them their jobs,” he said.

The investigation began earlier this week after other officers reported the incident to superiors. The minors received citations for underage possession of alcohol. The officers were put on administrative duty during the investigation.

Del Pozo said he decided on the unpaid suspensions after speaking with the Burlington Police Commission, the Burlington City Attorney, the city’s human resources department and the state’s attorney’s office.
